Dr. André Thomas

Dr. André J. Thomas, the Owen F. Sellers Professor of Music, is Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Music Education (choral) at the Florida State University School of Music. He previously served on the faculty of the University of Texas Department of Music at Austin. Dr. Thomas received his degrees from Friends University (B.A.), Northwestern University (M. M.), and the University of Illinois (D.M.A). He is in demand as a choral adjudicator, clinician, and director of Honors/All-State Choirs throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, and Australia.
Dr. Thomas has conducted choirs at the state, division, and national conventions of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Thomas has also distinguished himself as a composer/arranger.
Dr. Thomas conducts several choral ensembles at Florida State and teaches choral conducting. In the 1992-1993 academic year, he was awarded the University Award for Excellence in teaching. From 1993-1995 he served as the President of the Florida American Choral Directors Association. In 1995, the Florida chapter of ACDA presented Dr. Thomas with the prestigious Wayne Hugoboom Distinguished Service Award for his Dedicated Service, Leadership, and Consistent example of Excellence to his Profession--the choral art. In 1996, Florida State University honored Dr. André Thomas with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding scholarly excellence and strong commitment to Dr. King's ideals.
