Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt
Professor and Director of Choral Activities, Ohio State University
Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt is Director of Choral Activities at the Ohio State University, where she conducts the Chorale, the Women's Glee Club, teaches conducting, and coordinates the graduate conducting program. Dr. Apfelstadt earned degrees in vocal music education from the University of Toronto, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied conducting with Robert Fountain. She also has a diploma in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Her choirs have performed at regional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and at state and regional music education conferences. She has conducted many honor choirs and all-state choruses throughout the USA, Cuba, and England, and is a frequent adjudicator and clinician for choirs of all ages. Known for her particular expertise with women's voices, she is an advocate for quality literature and performance in this genre. She has been conductor- in- residence at various universities and directed the Oklahoma Arts Institute Chorus in the summer of 2006.
A prolific author, she has published over seventy articles on choral music in various journals and is a contributor to a forthcoming ACDA monograph on women conductors. She has served on the editorial boards of various journals, including the ACDA Choral Journal, the International Journal of Research in Choral Singing, and the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education. Currently national President of ACDA, Dr. Apfelstadt was a member of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers for several years and recorded two CD's for Telarc with the Singers in France. She is also Director of Music at Linworth United Methodist Church in Columbus where she conducts the Chancel Choir.
